Volunteering During The Holidays

It may not be December. But the holidays are already in full swing. The Santas are starting to stand outside of department stores. And there are already some who would like to steal that money anyway. The food banks are calling for extra help, as is the Red Cross. But of course, this is not the only time the homeless or other groups need help. All of these organizations need more help all year long. But like many stores, they rely on the Christmas season for the bulk of their earnings.

During the season, it’s easier to remember that other people need help. Whether we are helping Sub for Santa or we are going to the homeless shelters, it’s as good a time as any to help people out. But there are a few basic places that most go.

Sub For Santa

Sub For Santa is a program that allows kids to get presents that they would not get otherwise. It allows parents to provide a real Christmas for their children, whether this means getting them the basics such as shoes, shirts, etc., or it means being able to get toys that they could not afford because they are so focused on just getting the basics.

The Homeless Shelters

You can go in at any time and volunteer with the homeless shelters, the food courts. You can serve soup, help to file paperwork, or any number of other things to get the homeless setup with food and a place to sleep during the winter season, and especially during the holidays.

Drop Some Coins With Santa

It’s easy, the Salvation Army generally runs it, and it takes a minute of your time and thought. Simply drop a few dollars or a few coins in, and in a way, you donated.

Contact Local Hospices

A hospice is basically an organization to comfort the terminally ill and dying. It’s certainly not for everybody. But if you can handle it, you will find that comforting the sick can be part of what the holidays are all about. And without question, a simple visit, a bowl of soup, etc. would be well welcomed by many patients.

Make Cards For The Incarcerated

Opinions on the incarcerated vary. But the fact is that they can use some holiday cheer too. So whether you are making baked goods or a simple card for these inmates, it’s an easy way to be charitable. If you would like another candidate, you can do the same for firemen, policemen, or other social service workers.
