NATO (the North Atlantic Treaty Organization) has been the backbone for military relations for over half a century. As the alliance has faced odds in places like Bosnia, Afghanistan and Libia, the 22 member countries have banded together to much success. However, what of the non-NATO members, Thailand being one of them?
Major Non-NATO Ally
The US recognizes Thailand (and several other countries) as a Major Non-NATO Ally (MNNA). Countries with this status have special rights in cooperating with America in Defensive relations. Among these include cooperative research and development projects with the US, special rights when purchasing defensive equipment, and ownership of stocks for US property kept outside of bases. This gives MNNA’s very powerful rights right along side NATO allies in the eyes of the US.
